Savaria Telecab

Reviewed by:
Manufacturer/Retailer: Savaria
Cost: Expensive
Reimbursement: No insurance coverage.

Pros:

This has saved my life. It has allowed me to stay in my home, my own bedroom, and use the 2 main levels. The downstairs of my house remains equipment-free. Uses less space and is cheaper than a real elevator. It's pretty unobtrusive when it's sent to the next level.

Cons:
  1. You still need a lot of room for this. It is basically an enclosed lift. It needs a 3x6 or a 4x5 space and a loadbearing wall. That space is then not available for real use other than walking on it. Otherwise, you always have to remember to move chairs or whatever out of the way
  2. It is not especially attractive.
  3. I thought we had lots of options as to where to put it. The salesman made it seem as though you can put it anywhere. Not exactly. Depending on your house structure placement may be very limited.
  4. The pictures show this in a bedroom. DO NOT put it in your bedroom unless it's very large. You will not have room to maneuver in a wheelchair or use your other equipment without sending it down.
  5. It can only work on 2 levels. If you have more than 2 levels in your house, they will remain inaccessible.
Summary:
I had to do a lot of construction for this. According to the salesmen you only need to make a cutout in the ceiling and perhaps strengthen a wall. NOT. Some companies that put this in also do the construction. Others only install the lift and you have to get your own contractor for the construction. The costs of the lift itself depend on the options you choose. Since for various reasons I had to get my own contractor, he did not feel the walls of my house would hold this up properly and we also had to add joists in the basement and move a radiator.

Even though I have a large master suite, this would never have worked in my bedroom with all my equipment. I had to put it in my dining room and it goes up to a guest bedroom, which has pretty much become unusable for guests since that's where I go in and out.

But all in all, it's wonderful.

Pros:

I have the 48 inches wide bed/mattress. It is just like a hospital bed but nicer looking. It vibrates.

I have not yet found any.

Summary:
I absolutely love my bed. The company is Canadian and based in the province of Quebec.

Manufacturer/Retailer: Vitality Medical

Pros:

Keeps those blankets off your feet and smashing down your toes.

Cons:
Has to be adjusted often after making the bed. Cats think it is a perfect place to snuggle.

Summary:
I love it. Those heavy sheets or blanket feel like they are 50 lbs on my feet. This allows me to be comfortable in bed.

 Adjustable Tempur-Pedic® Bed

Reviewed by:
Manufacturer/Retailer: Tempur-Pedic®
Cost: Varies
Reimbursement: Not covered

Pros:

The memory foam mattress is very comfortable. We purchased the split-mattress version so that my father can sleep or sit elevated as necessary. Our version also has both heat and massaging functionality which add a bit more comfort as well.

Cons:
I don't believe it elevates quite as much as a standard hospital bed. This was a bit challenging when my father had a bit more mobility as it limited the amount of "adjusting" he could do on his own. With the progression, this has not been a factor.

Summary:
This was a very costly purchase, but it does provide a good deal of comfort and features. As this is not covered by insurance, similar results may be obtained by a hospital bed (which is covered), along with a twin bed alongside.

Mattress Genie

Reviewed by:  Manufacturer/Retailer: Contour Living
Cost: $90.00 - $145.00 depending on the size needed
Reimbursement: May have been covered but we did not check in to that.

Pros:

The Mattress Genie just fits under her regular mattress in her regular bed. So she can stay in her regular bed like she wants to. It saves my back from adding or removing pillows under Marcie’s head while lifting her at the same time. Now I just push a button and her upper body moves up or down easily. And a third buttons allows it to go completely flat if you want to. It allows me to tube feed her before she gets up in the mornings since I can raise her up so high while still in bed. It has been a big help to us. The motor is small and sits under her bed. The controls are lighted so you can see them in the night easily.

Cons:
The motor that raises and lowers the Mattress Genie is kinda loud – like a vacuum cleaner motor - but worth the noise even in the middle of the night

Summary:
It is very helpful to us. Marcie can stay in her own bed in her own room and not have to sleep in the “electric” bed we have in another room. And she is happy with this arrangement.
