Wiring a call switch to the PS2000 Pager

Unless you are able to use it "as is" - meaning you can reach and press the buttons on the PS2000, you need to add an easy to press call button. I use "The Ultimate Switch" from Enabling Devices. Enabling Devices has many other less expensive switches that will work too but "The Ultimate Switch" is the easiest for me to activate.

Unfortunately, the call switches all have a 1/8" jack plug but the PS2000 input jack (on the back of the PS2000) is an RJ11 input jack ( the kind of jack that telephones have). So, to connect the PS2000 and the call switch, you need to wire the switch to a telephone cable. Some options are:

A. Cut off the 1/8" jack and replace it with a RJ11. Easiest but means you will have to either move the base unit or drag a long phone cable after you if you want to use the switch in a different room.
OR
B. Use a splitter to make two phone cables to run phone cable to two different rooms. Then make a plug in adapter so you can move the switch from room to room, or use different switches in each room.

Instructions for Option A:

Buy a length of standard telephone cable. Get as many feet of telephone cable as you will need to reach from wherever you decide to put the base unit to your bed or chair. Just as with running speaker wires, you'll want enough cable to tuck it out of the way along baseboards, etc.

One jack of the telephone cable fits in the input jack on the back of the PS2000. Cut the other end off and strip it down to its 4 wires.

Cut the 1/8" jack off the end off the call switch cable and strip it down to its 2 wires.

Splice the black wire of the phone cable to either one of the wires of the switch cable and the yellow wire to the other.

Clip off the protruding bare red and green wires.

Wrap the splices separately with electrical tape, then wrap the entire connection securely together.

Plug the PS2000 into an electrical outlet and the phone jack into the PS2000. Put battery in the pager and turn it on. Press the call switch and the beeper will go off.

Instructions for Option B:

At Radio Shack buy one telephone cable splitter and two 6' mono cables with a 1/8" male mini plug on one end and a 1/8" female mini plug on the other.

Buy 2 lengths of phone cable. Get each one long enough to run from the spot you pick for the base unit to your bed or chair. Just as with running speaker wires, you'll want enough cable to tuck it out of the way along baseboards, etc.

Plug the splitter into the input jack on the back of the PS2000. (See diagram below.)

Plug one of the phone cables into one of the plugs on the splitter. Cut the other end of the phone cable and strip it down to its 4 wires.

Cut the male plug off the 6' mono cable and strip it down to its 2 wires.

Splice the black wire of the phone cable to either one of the wires of the adapter cable and the yellow wire to the other.

Clip off the protruding bare red and green wires.

Wrap the splices separately with electrical tape, then wrap the entire connection securely together.

Repeat this with the other phone cable and 6' mono cable, this time splicing the red and green wires and clipping off the black and yellow.

Plug the PS2000 into an electrical outlet and the phone jack into the PS2000.

Plug the call switch into either adapter cable. Put a battery in the pager and turn it on. Press the call switch and the beeper will go off.
