Bathroom Design

Our bathroom is 12 foot long by 6 1/2 foot wide.

The shower area is 6 X 6 1/2. There's basically a smooth roll into the shower. The size makes it hard to buy a shower rod since they come in 5 and 6 foot lengths. The rod has to be custom cut.

The shower area is a 'mud floor' pitched to the drain and the floor is reinforced with double studs (or whatever you call them). We used a 2 inch tile so the floor can be pitched in the shower area, but for aesthetics, we switched to a bigger floor tile on the regular part of the floor. We used a 'sand' grout on the floor to prevent slipping.  The shower curtain hangs a little bit on the floor to prevent excess water from running into the bathroom..

We used the Moen shower combination and have 4 'things' to shoot water out from under the window. I would have preferred these to be on the same side as the other shower fixtures. They are too far away since the shower area is so big and if you don't close the shower curtain, the water can shoot out further than 6 feet.

We also left extra room around the toilet to get a wheelchair or a lift next to the toilet.  The toilet is 18 inches high so we can just get a wheelchair commode over the bowl. Since he can't sit without support or armrests, the rolling commode is a necessity. We did buy the removable arms for the bowl, but we haven't used them yet since the commode works nicely.

We used a corner pedestal sink but this may not be the right thing if you can use your hands. In our case, this was not a concern.

Other than the minor complaints, we love the size and it gives a lot of room to maneuver with chairs, lifts and extra people!
